SEO-Friendly Web Development

SEO-Friendly Web Development — Search Performance Built in From Day One

Every agency says their websites are SEO-friendly. What most mean is the site uses a popular theme, has Yoast installed, and doesn't have obvious errors at launch. That's a low bar. Genuinely SEO-friendly web development means the search architecture is planned at the briefing stage — before any design begins — and implemented correctly during development. Not audited afterwards.

Table of Contents

At Saints Soldier, the people who build your website are the same people who configure its SEO structure. There is no handoff. The schema is implemented by the developer who writes the templates. The heading hierarchy is planned by the person who builds the pages. The Core Web Vitals targets are set and tested before the site goes live. This is how development and SEO should work — and it’s how we’ve worked since 2012.

Why SEO Afterwards Is Always More Expensive

The Cost of Retrofitting SEO to a Live Site

When SEO is treated as a post-launch task, fixing foundational issues costs significantly more than building them correctly the first time. Changing URL structures on a live site requires a full redirect mapping exercise and risks ranking drops during the transition. Retrofitting schema markup across hundreds of pages is time-consuming and prone to implementation errors. Restructuring heading hierarchy that has been in place for two years requires content changes on every affected page. None of this is technically difficult — it’s just entirely unnecessary if the development is done properly from the start.

What Built for SEO Actually Means in Development

It means the developer makes deliberate decisions about page hierarchy, heading structure, URL format, internal linking, and schema types during the build — not as an optional extra reviewed at launch. It means the person writing the code understands how Google reads a page, not just how a browser renders it. The difference between a site built this way and one that isn’t is visible in Google Search Console within weeks of launch.

What We Build Into Every Website During Development

URL Architecture and Breadcrumb Structure

URL slugs are descriptive, consistent, and keyword-relevant. The hierarchy of parent and child pages mirrors the sitemap and reflects how Google understands content relationships. Breadcrumb navigation is implemented both visually on the page and as BreadcrumbList schema in JSON-LD — so search results show the page path rather than the raw URL. This is documented and approved before a single template is built.

Heading Hierarchy H1 to H4 — Planned, Not Guessed

Every page gets one H1 containing the primary keyword. H2 sections divide the page into logical, keyword-relevant topics. H3s support the H2 above them. This structure isn’t complex — but it requires discipline during development, and most sites we audit have it wrong. Duplicate H1s, H2s used purely for styling, heading levels skipped without logic. We plan the heading map for every page before development begins and stick to it.

Schema Markup — JSON-LD at Build Stage

Schema markup is how you tell Google explicitly what your site is, what it does, and who runs it. We implement @graph JSON-LD at build stage — not via a plugin generating approximate output. Organization, WebSite, Service, FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList schema are assigned per page type and validated with Google’s Rich Results Test before the site goes live.

Core Web Vitals Targets Set During Development

We set LCP, CLS, and INP targets at the start of every project and test against them during development — not at the end. Image sizes are specified during design. JavaScript loading order is configured during development. Layout stability is tested on real devices before handover. Performance is a development constraint, not a retrospective fix.

Why Development and SEO Must Be the Same Team

When the development team and the SEO team are different agencies, things fall through the gaps. The SEO team recommends a URL structure change. The developer implements it incorrectly or deprioritises it. The schema types are approved in the brief but never make it into the codebase. The Core Web Vitals issue is identified in the post-launch audit but sits in a backlog for months.

At Saints Soldier, development and SEO are handled by the same 14-person in-house team. The developer who builds the page also implements the schema, configures the heading structure, and tests the Core Web Vitals score before handover. Founded in 2012, this is how we’ve worked for 14 years — and it’s why clients who come to us after working with agencies that separate these disciplines notice the difference immediately.

Questions Worth Answering Properly
Frequently Asked Questions — SEO-Friendly Web Development

SEO-friendly web development means building websites where search engine optimization is planned and implemented during the development process — not added as a post-launch extra. This includes URL architecture, heading structure (H1 to H4), schema markup (JSON-LD), internal linking, Core Web Vitals performance, and Google Search Console setup, all addressed before the site goes live.

Retrofitting SEO to a live website is more expensive and disruptive than building it correctly from the start. URL structure changes require redirect mapping and risk ranking drops. Heading restructuring requires content changes on every affected page. Schema added after launch may conflict with existing code. Building SEO in during development is faster, cheaper, and produces better long-term results.

URL architecture is the structure and format of your website's page addresses. Clean, descriptive, hierarchical URLs help Google understand the relationship between pages and help visitors understand where they are in the site. For example /services/web-design/wordpress-website-design/ is more SEO-relevant than /page-id=124.

Heading hierarchy (H1, H2, H3, H4) is the structural outline of a web page. Google reads this as a signal of what the page is about and how the content is organised. A page with one keyword-relevant H1, well-structured H2 sections, and supporting H3s gives Google a clear topic signal. Duplicate H1s or headings used purely for styling confuse that signal.

Yes. Schema markup in JSON-LD format is implemented during the development phase as standard on every Saints Soldier project. We implement Organization, WebSite, Service, FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList schema types as applicable per page — all validated with Google Rich Results Test before launch.

Core Web Vitals are Google performance ranking signals: LCP (load speed), CLS (layout stability), and INP (responsiveness). We set targets at project start and test against them during development — addressing image sizes, JavaScript loading order, and layout stability before launch.

WordPress is our primary platform and where we deliver our best work. All our SEO development practices — URL architecture, schema markup, heading structure, Core Web Vitals — are implemented within WordPress builds using Elementor Pro and Yoast or Rank Math.

Yoast SEO helps you manage meta titles, descriptions, and sitemaps. It does not plan your URL architecture, implement schema markup correctly, structure your heading hierarchy, or optimise Core Web Vitals. These require deliberate development decisions — not plugin defaults.

Yes. We audit and improve the SEO architecture of existing WordPress sites — restructuring URLs with proper redirects, implementing schema markup, fixing heading hierarchies, and addressing Core Web Vitals issues. Available as a standalone technical SEO engagement.
